They maintain operations while transforming. The business can't pause while systems are modernized. This requires careful planning, parallel operation during transitions, and realistic expectations about the duration and complexity of the work.
They invest in architecture, not just implementation. Solving today's problems with tomorrow's technical debt isn't progress. Successful modernization establishes foundations that remain sound as requirements evolve.
They build internal capability alongside external support. Consultants can accelerate transformation, but organizations need internal expertise to maintain and evolve systems after the project ends. Knowledge transfer should be explicit, not assumed.
They accept that it takes longer than hoped. Every modernization project we've seen has taken longer than initial estimates. Acknowledging this reality upfront—in planning, in communication with stakeholders, in expectations about intermediate milestones—leads to better outcomes than optimistic timelines that erode credibility when missed.
Taking the First Step
